Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) is a syndrome of abnormal neurological function that appears in the first days of life for infants born after 35 weeks gestation. It can be caused by reduced oxygen or blood flow around the time of birth, such as from placental abruption, umbilical cord prolapse, or a ruptured uterus. NE can manifest as seizures, a reduced level of consciousness, and difficulty breathing.
