new zealands state education system, introduced in 1877, was designed by scots and based on the education act of 1872. this meant that new zealands education system was almost identical to scotlands, and the opportunities available to new zealanders were significanly improved.

scots introduced the celebration of new years to new zealand. on that day events were held to celebrate scottish cultures such as caledonian game. this developed new zealands sense of community + identity.

the british government became so concerned by the mistreatment of native people of new zealand by scots and others that they signed a special treaty outlining the correct process for purchasing land from the Maori. this demonstrates that scots exploited the native peoples.

many scots continued to ignore the provisions of the treaty of waitangi and took land from native people unfairly. they also destroyed much of the natural landscape to make room for farms. This severely disrupted the traditional way of life.

donald maclean
donald maclean was a scot who learned maori language and eventually became minister for natives within the new zealand government. he took his responsibilities to the native people seriously and worked to ensure that land was always purchased appropriately by british settlers and sold willingly by native people.
