moving due to coercion Flashcards
emigration agents
oversold the benefits of moving and abroad. pressured scot’s into taking ‘one time’ offers. they had to meet quotas of emigrants to stay employed so not always looking out for scots
the british government
the government wanted to address overpopulation and make sure that the empire was populated & profitable. empire settlement act 1922 gave £3mil/year to support relocation of scot’s across the empire. scot’s pressured by gov officials
the highlands and islands emigration society
HIES sent 5000 scot’s to australia from 1852-57. the group was mostly funded by scottish landowners to make highland clearances easier & took advantage of 1846 famine to pressure scot’s into accepting their support
the church of scotland
the church established funds and encouraged many scot’s to emigrate across the empire to spread their presbyterian faith & the good news of jesus. many scot’s with religious faith felt pressured to fufill christian duties
family and friends
the letters sent back by family were coercive in 2 ways
1. exaggerated benefits which unfairly encouraged scot’s to move only to have a more difficult life
2. they used emotional language to pressure scot’s to move to support them in establishing new business & farms
