FIG TREE AND CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE-
JESUS SEES A FIG TREE BUT FINDS NO FRUIT BECAUSE IT WASNT THE SEASON FOR FIGS- fig tree are the Jewish people who fail to recognise Jesus as the messiah and God will abandon them.
JESUS ENTERS TEMPLE AND SEES PEOPLE BUYING AND SELLING ANIMALS. UPSTES MONEY TABLES- angry at the way they use the Temple for corrupt purposes.
‘MY HOUSE WILL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF GOD FOR ALL NATIONS BUT YOU HAVE MADE IT A DEN OF ROBBERS’- critiquing abuse of the temple as the OT prophets did.
PRIESTS LOOK FOR A WAY TO KILL JESUS AS THEY FEARED HIM- start of the plot to kill Jesus.
THEY SEE THE WITHERED FIG TREE. JESUS TELLS DISCIPLES TO HAVE FAITH- warning to Jews about the lack of faith.
HISTORICAL ACCURACY- did mark move the fig tree story to make a point about Jesus’ lack of faith.
ANOINTING AT BETHANY-
CHEIF PRIESTS AND TEACHERS OF THE LAW LOOKING TO ARREST AND KILL JESUS- Jewish authorities see Jesus as a threat.
AT SIMON THE LEPOUR’S HOUSE WOMEN POUR EXPENSIVE PERFUME OVER JESUS- Jesus mixed with outcasts. Custom to anoint as a sign of devotion.
ONLOOKERS CRITICISE HER FOR WASTING MONEY- they lack faith.
JESUS DEFENDS HER. PREPARE HIS BODY FOR BURIAL, WILL BE REMEMBERED- proclaims his death and recognises Jesus as messiah. This rectifies his body not being anointed at death.
JUDUS GOES TO CHEIF PRIESTS AND AGREES TO BETRAY JESUS FOR MONEY- judas acts in contrast to the woman.
LAST SUPPER AND PETERS DENIAL PREDICTED-
DISCIPLES ASK WHERE TO PREPARE A MEAL. JESUS TELLS THEM THEY WILL FIND A ROOM- does Jesus have supernatural powers or has he arranged this?
DISCIPLES FOUND THE ROOM AS JESUS SAID.
JESUS PREDICTS BETRAYAL- Jesus not surprised, predicts OT prophecy. Is judas responsible or is it gods plan?
JESUS TAKES BREAD AND BREAKS, ‘THIS IS MY BODY’- Jesus’ sacrifice will save Christianity.
‘THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE COVENANT POURED OUT’- link to Moses OT who painted lambs blood on door posts to save Israelites.

ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM-
JESUS SENDS DISCIPLES TO GET THE DONEY. HE SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN- supernatural powers or pre-arrangement?
DISCIPLES PUT CLOAK ON THE DONKEY- as with the throne of a king.
UNRIDDEN DONKEY- saved for someone important.
PEOPLE THROW CLOAKS AND WAVE BRANCHES- sign of respect. Recognise him as messiah. Like king Jehm in the O.T.
‘HOSANNA’- praise him.
‘COMING OF OUR FATHER DAVID- they thought messiah would be descendant of king David.
DONKEY AND PEACEFUL- Zacharia prophesied that the messiah would be a warrior but peaceful.
HISTORICALLY ACCURATE- were they waving the palms for Jesus or a festival?
