What the overall New Right family view?
New Rights praise the nuclear family society and blame any problems in society on those from single parents or broken homes
Why are new rights critical of single parent families?
- they believe children need a male and female role model for effective socialisation
- they argue single parent families cost too much in welfare benefit
Why do new rights think the nuclear family structure is declining?
-secularisation
-increased sexual permissiveness
-greater tolerance

What is meant by the ‘nanny state’
Where the state is taking on too much responsibility for individuals’ lives
What is meant by ‘married to the state’?
Lone mothers becoming dependent upon state benefits, they will find it very difficult or not worth coming off benefits for employment.
What do Dennis and Erdos think?
They claim that increasing numbers of children born outside marriage are raised by single mothers, placing them at a disadvantage
What are criticisms of new right family views?
-they tend to group all single parent families together, without acknowledging that many nuclear families fail to socialise their children
-1996 economic research found that most unmarried mothers were in a regular relationship with the father

-they recognise the impact that long-term dependence can have within families
-offer practical solutions to try and tackle the issue of welfare dependency e.g.welfare to work programmes
