What is a nuclear family?
A family made up of one adult male, female and dependant children. Traditionally the male as the ‘breadwinner’ and the woman being responsible for the household.
What is an extended family?
A nuclear family, but added to it are other relatives.
What is a vertically extended family?
A family containing 3 generations , such as grandparents, parents and children
What is a horizontal extended family?
A family contained other relatives from the same generation , such as two brothers , their wives and children .
What is a lone parent family?
A family where there is just one parent and their child/children
What is a reconstituted/step family?
A family consisting of parents and children ,where a new family is created after a divorce through a second marriage.
What are gay and lesbian families?
A family with a same sex couple living together with their child/children
What are empty nest families?
These families are originally nuclear family, but the children have grown up and moved out of the household
