New right views on education Flashcards
New right
Suggests that schools should be concerned about training the workforce. Making sure that the most able students have their talents developed and are recruited into the most important jobs, while others are prepared for the lower-level employment
Education should socialise young people into collective values to build social cohesion and social solidarity, to ensure a stable society.
Chubb and moe 1990,1992 American study
Suggest that state and local authorities are not the best way of achieving this because they provide a single type of school for all students.
They argue there should be a free market in education, with different types on independently managed schools and colleges, which are run like businesses and tailored to the needs of local communities
Reccomend that parents should be given the educational vouchers to spend on the school of their choice. Thisnisnparentocracyv
Marketisation of schools
Competition for students and funding will lead to a more efficient education system which delivers better value for taxpayers.
This is referred to as the marketisation of education. Schools operate like supermarkets, forced to supply cheaper and better quality products fir their customers.

Evaluation of the new right on education
Reason why fee paying schools do better than state schools is more complicated than just being due to competition. Children who attend fee paying schools often have privileged lives
Excessive competition in schools may harm children. So it is not really a good thing.
New right and functionalist perspective comparison
- the most talented and skilful members of society deserve higher rewards than the less skilled.
- education systems should be meritocratic
-education should produce workers with appropriate skills
-education systems need to respond to globalisation
Functions
Secondary socialisation by teaching social rules and how to abide by them
Allocating roles/sifting and sorting
To teach specialist skills required fir work
How are schools meritocratic
Pupils in school are all judged by the same values - all sit the same exams
Students are encouraged to make an effort and they will rewarded for this
Those with higher qualifications will go onto further education and gain the best jobs.
