New Right & Postmodernist & ITheory On The Family✔️ Flashcards
How do Postmodernist theories on the family contrast with New Right ideas?
They support and celebrate family diversity and believe that there are alternatives to be nuclear family which should not be criticised. People can ‘pic and mix’ their own life reflecting their own needs and preferences.
How could you critique the postmodernist theory that we live in a cultural supermarket and can choose how we live our life? (2)
- argue that by all people can choose their family = e.g. may come from a culture which denies homosexuals.
- some may want to cohabit but can’t because of their religion or their religious family.
Why are the New Right critical on single parent families? (3)
- They assume that all of them are financially unstable and expensive for the state - live on benefits
- children are denied the father figure which is bad especially for boys who need a clear role model. This apparently leads to crime.
- They see them as lacking moral responsibility as they didn’t marry before kids and are still getting divorced when they have kids.
What do the New Right believe?
They have a conservative approach and believe the nuclear traditional family is the ideal structure - they are also strong supporters of marriage and therefore oppose divorce&cohabitation&sex before marriage&gay families etc.
