new right and education Flashcards
neoliberalism
idea that the state should not provide services such as education, health and welfare
they believe governments should encourage competition, privatise state run businesses and deregulate markets.
believe schools should be more like businesses, empowering competition
role of education
favour marketisation of education
1) education should socialise people into shared values and instil a sense of national identity
however, they argue the current education system is not doing this bc it is run by state
- politicians impose their views on what sort of education system we should have - consumers don’t get a say
Chubb&Moe
state education failed because
1) it hasn’t created equal opportunity + failed needs of disadvantaged groups
2) fails to produce pupils with skills needed
3) private schools deliver higher quality education bc they are answerable to paying consumers
C&M suggest
introduce market system that puts education in the hands of consumers
schools should not automatically get funding from the state regardless of performance
instead each family would be given a voucher to spend on buying education from school
:- schools become more supportive and of parents wishes since the vouchers are the main source of schools income
schools would have to compete for business
two roles of state
1) state imposed framework to compete e.g. offsted
2) schools transmit a shared culture by imposing a national curriculum, seeks to guarantee that schools socialise pupils into single cultural heritage
new right believe education should affirm the national identity and they oppose multicultural education
EVAL
bewitz and ball argue that competition benefits the middle class
critics argue the real cause of failure is not state control but social inequality and inadequate funding
marxists argue education does not impose a shared national culture but imposes the culture of a dominant minority ruling class. deviates culture of W/C and ethnicities
