New Right Flashcards
What’s the New Right Perspective on Education?
Agree with Functionalists that education is meritocratic. Therefore, if children don’t succeed it will be their/their parents fault. Competition between schools motivates teachers and education instills drive, initiative and enterprise.
Hargreaves (not from the New Right, about the New Right)
New Right want education to be run by successful business. Hargreaves’ theory of Kentucky Fried Schooling supports the marketisation of schools. Schools need to offer what the customers want e.g provide a good quality education so that the pupils can attain good grades.
This would allow local businesses to influence education for those they will employ later on.
Buchanan and Tullock
The purpose of education is to reflect the interests of the pupils and parents. Currently, Buchanan and Tullock speculate, education does an inadequate job of this and education instead reflects the interests of the managers and teachers which needs to change as our education is a monopoly in which alternative options aren’t there.
Buchanan and Tullock Evaluation
The more options available to consumers has been reflected in recent years with the increase in academies, faith schools and soon to be more grammar schools.
Hargreaves Evaluation
But this would cause a situation where students in wealthier areas have a better choice of careers than those who live in deprived areas with no businesses.
