New Monarchy Flashcards
Land Grants NEW
Concentrated land in the hands of few loyal nobles many of whom were related by blood
Eg Gloucester was given reclaimed Neville lands
Land Grants OLD
Edward had done this in his first reign aswell with Warwick and Nevilles
Placed Rivers in charge of the Prince of Wales’ Council, but had existed before 1471
Finances NEW
Edward extracted benevolences- forced loans from the gentry, nobility and church in return for good governance. By 1475 had claimed £20,000
To administer his own income, he increasingly used the King’s chamber rather than the Exchequer
Allowed him to keep his own income separate from the realm’s income
Finances OLD
Still used exchequer and taxation in some instances, eg 1475 received over £100,000 for his French invasion
Just like previous kings, Edward had to live of his own land as benevolences would not be enough for daily running
Law and Order NEW
Edward increasingly used his own household men to deal with justice in local areas
Appointed numerous members of his own household to be Sheriffs and Justices of the Peace eg John Howard employed in east Anglia
Increasingly used more JP’s
Developed new organisations such as Gloucester’s Council of the North
Law and Order OLD
Still used King’s bench and toured the shires
When it came to decision making he rarely acted alone, used petitions, complaints and parliamentary bills before making decisions
Household NEW
Introduced new methods to regulate household spending. 1472- commissioned Black Book which was an instruction manual on how to lay out royal court divided into ‘above stairs and ‘below stairs’
Ordinance of 1478 restricted royal spending and provided for stricter book keeping. costs were cut
Household OLD
Still used own household to project image of majesty, splendour and power
