France Successes

A

Successes:
‘Treaty of London 1474’ anti-French alliance, Edward invaded France in 1475 with large army and biggest taxation since Henry V
Picquiny Treaty 1475, Edward receives £10,000 pension

Whole affair did show how Edward was able to claim huge amounts of tax without rebellion, high level of domestic control

France Failures

A

When Edward did invade, the support from Brittany and Burgundy didn’t arrive
Louis wanted peace due to his conflict with Italy, agreement known as Picquiny Treaty

7 year truce and agreement not to attack Brittany
Not popular with English people
Gained little land and was not supported by Gloucester

Brittany

A

1472- Treaty of Chateaugiron, stated they would support invasion. Failed

1476- Francis agreed to give Tudor to Edward after Treaty if Picquiny, but Tudor fell ‘ill’ and returned home

A

Initially good relations due to relationship with his bro-in-law Charles Duke of Burgundy
Death of Charles, his wife wanted to arrange marriage for daughter (Mary) wanted English marriage, Clarence hoped it was him but was refused by Edward

A

Margaret married Mary to Maximillian of Austria
Mary had died in the same year from hunting accident, Maximillian was unpopular
Needed his own protection from France

Treaty of Arras with King Louis XI in December 1482- daughter would marry French Dauphin and Edward would lose pension
Burgundy gave Artois land to France

Scotland 1

A

1474- Agreement with Scotland that his daughter Cecily would marry Scottish heir James in return for Scotland not attacking England during invasion of France
Agreement lasted 6 years before breaches. Raided across border and burned Bamburgh Castle

Scotland 2

A

Fotheringay Treaty 1482- Duke of Albany (King J brother) made deal with Edward to place Albany on Scottish throne. Edward would receive Berwick and land in S Scotland

Aug 1482 Gloucester and Albany couldn’t displace James and Albany defected back to his brothers side
Gloucester forced to retreat but captured border town Berwick, was militarily and psychologically significant BUT not worth time and money invested
