wanted by the middle class, stability

started to claim that heredity was the true form of power; heir and a spare (nobles lose power since it goes to the king)

was called the spider because he had a habit of making alliances w everybody

the separation between church and state
Habsburgs
very powerful family; HRE, Austria, etc; still rules places to this day (lots of incest?)
Bank of Amsterdam
Amsterdam center of trade and banking, this bank very powerful
The Medici family
powerful family in Florence; owned very important bank, Medici bank; many nobility and countries borrowed from the bank so it was almost like they ruled
