New Liberalism Flashcards
Knowledge
New liberalism wing of the party that was more open to change included
David Lloyd George, Herbert Henry Asquith and Winston Churchill -this meant that they were more likely to pass reforms to help the poor
1908 the old liberal prime minister died and was replaced by Asquith which allowed him to pass more reforms to help the working class
Analysis
Important factor :
Lloyd George was especially sympathetic towards the working class + is credited with providing the old age pension
likewise Churchill encouraged reform and helped with labour exchanges and trade boards act these new liberals revitalised the attitude towards the working class
Negative analysis
New liberalism alone not as much of important factor :
actions of new liberals forced by trade unions and industrial discontent reforms like the trade union act of 1913
- just a response to political discontent , not down to any hard work, plans or true influence from the new liberals
Evaluation
Not as important of a factor as the growth of the labour party:
-Ideas of the new liberals stolen from labour party including labour exchanges -without labour party no risk of politicians and support going elsewhere reforms passed as response to threat
-P. Thane agrees: “fear of labour remained the motive for the promotion of social reform among non-labour politicians”
Proving without threat of growing Labour Party new liberalism has no significance in causing liberal welfare reforms
