new genetics Flashcards
1
Q
what is a chromosome?
A
can be double or single stranded
each species has a specific number of chromosomes, therefore body cells of that species have that number of chromosomes
2
Q
what is a homologous chromosome?
A
chromosomes occur in pairs
each pair is similar in form and arrangement of genetic material
3
Q
are chromosomal pairs identical?
A
not necessarily
4
Q
how many pairs of chromosomes do humans have?
A
46 chromosomes -> 23 pairs
5
Q
what is a gene?
A
a part of the chromosome that governs the expression of a particular trait (eg. eye colour)
6
Q
what is an allele?
A
an alternate form of a gene located at a particular place on a chromosome (eg. brown eyes and green eyes)
