New Deck - 8/9/20 Flashcards
AIRMET types
Mountain obscuration (S), Turbulence (T), Icing/Freezing (Z)
Activating runway lights at night
3 clicks (low), 5 (med) or 7 (high)
ADSB required
ABC + E Above 10k + Above C to 10 + Mode C Veil + more than 3k within 12nm over Gulf of Mexico
Night definition
end to beginning of civil twilight (logging), 1 hour after or before (currency)
Change of address must notify
within 30 days
Taxi wind correction controls
elevator: climb (tail wheel) or fly straight (trike) in a headwind, dive in a tailwind. Aileron: accept a tailwind, fight a headwind
Flight control directions
left: left aileron up; right: right aileron up; nose up: elevator up, nose down: elevator down; yaw: mirrors the pedal pushed
ELT frequencies
121.5 and 243.0
Mode C veil (class B)
30nm
Procedural outer area (Class C)
20nm
Left turning tendencies
torque, p factor (downward blade takes a bigger bite in high AOA), gyroscopic precession (force on top is felt on right/yaws left. Mostly tail wheels), spiraling slipstream
Recent night experience time window
begin 1 hour after sunset, end 1 hour before sunrise
Special use airspace (SUA)
Prohibited (never fly), restricted (fly within limitations, warning (restricted, but over international waters), MOAs (Military operations), alert areas (everyone beware), controlled firing arenas, MTRs (military training routes), TFRs (Temporary flight restrictions)
True heading
True course (desired ground track), corrected for wind
CFR parts to know
aircraft (21-59), airmen (61-68), get your license (61), airspace (71-77), Operations (91-109), keep your license (91), schools (140-147)
Common AC subject numbers
20 (Aircraft), 60 (Airmen), 70 (Airspace), 90 (Air Traffic & Operation), 140 (Schools)
LAHSO clearance visibility minimum
1000ft ceiling, 3sm visibility
Effects of bad CG
not getting the nose up on takeoff, or striking it on landing (too far forward); less stable in pitch (too far aft)
Fog types
grounds cools the air (radiation or ice fog), sea breeze fog (advection), warm/moist air moving up sloping land (upslope fog), precipitation fog, super cold air moving over water (steam fog / sea smoke) produces turbulence/icing
Aircraft taxonomies
category (transport, normal, utility, acrobatic, limited, restricted), class [of propulsion] (airplane, rotorcraft, glider, balloon, etc) and type (aircraft of similar design, e.g. 737)
Airmen taxonomies
category of broad classification (airplane, rotorcraft, glider, lighter-than-air), class of similar operating characteristics (single engine, multi engine, land, water) and type (aircraft base make/model)
Student pilot certificate expires
Never
Navigation light colors/sides
Red (left), Green (right), White (Rear facing)
Carb Ice (signs)
loss of power (rpm in fixed or manifold pressure in constant speed) or full engine stoppage
Carb Heat (effects)
slight drop in rpm, rough running for 1-2m while ice clears
Wildlife refuges altitude
minimum 2000, partly because bird strikes
Propeller spin direction
Clockwise, as viewed from the cockpit
Absence of sky/visibility in ATIS means
Ceiling of 5,000+, Visibility 5sm+
BasicMed in other countries
Mexico, Bahamas, but not Canada
WAAS accuracy
1.5 to 2m
VASI colors
W/W = High as a kite; R/W = You’re all right; R/R = You’re dead; W/R = doesn’t exist
Supplemental oxygen required above
15,000 MSL
NTSB “Serious Injury” definition
Hospitalized for 48+ hours within 7 days
