Engines Flashcards
Detonation (what is it?)
explosive combustion. result: roughness, loss of power, cylinder failure
Detonation (cause)
overheated engine, or low fuel grade/over lean mixture
Detonation (solution)
lower throttle, enrich mixture, lower nose, cool engine
Preignition (what is it)
ignition happens too soon. roughness, high temperatures
Preignition (cause)
hot spots (carbon deposits), cracked spark plug, damage to combustion chamber
Preignition (solution)
lower throttle, enrich mixture, lower nose, cool engine
Oil pressure
after start, pressure must rise within 30 (warm day) - 60 seconds (cold). Temperature comes in a few minutes
Ammeter (what does it show)
Is the alternator winning or losing?
Loadmeter (what does it show)
How much total load is on the electrical system?
Carb ice (when is there risk)
Most common at <70F OAT and 80% humidity, during low RPM approach. Can happen up to 100F.
Carb ice (First sign)
Lowering of RPMs
Supercharger/Turbo charger
Compresses air (powered by engine or by exhaust) in order to get sea level performance at altitude
