Neutralisation Flashcards
If we start with some alkali what happens to the pH as we add more acid?
Initially there is only alkali particles so the pHis 11
when you add some acid this reacts with some of the alkali
this continues until you add exactly the same number of acid and alkali particles at which point the mixture is neutral pH seven as they react together and cancel out
the moment you add an extra particle of acid the pH is acidic
What happens when the acid and alkali react?
When the acid and alkali react they don’t just disappear leaving nothing ,a neutralisation reaction occurs and a salt and water are produced
Acid + alkali —> salt + water
E.g.
Hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide —> sodium chloride + water
How does the salt get it’s name when an acid and alkali react?
The call gets its name the same way as an acid and metal with water produced as the other product instead of hydrogen
What would you add to a bee sting?
Add bicarbona of soda (pH 9) as it is an alkali and will neutralise the bee sting
What would you do if you were trying to grow plants in soil where acid rain has fallen?
Add limestone (pH 9) as it is alkaline and will neutralise the soil (you could use bicarbonate of soda but limestone is already available outside for free)
What would you do if lime scale (made of limestone) has built up on your tap?
Put bag of vinegar (pH3) arid the tapand leave it to neutralise the alkaline limescale
What would you do if you have heartburn (a condition by the acid in your stomach escaping to your food pipe)
Make a solution of bicarbonate of soda to drink as it as an alkali so it will the neutralise the acid (you are better off taking a heartburn tablet as you might know how much to take)
