Neutralasation Flashcards
What is neutralisation
The reaction between and acid and an alkali producing salt and water
What salt is formed when the acid is hydrochloric acid
Chloride e.g hydrochloric acid + calcium carbonate = calcium chloride
What salt is produced when the acid is sulphuric acid
Sulfate e.g sulphuric acid + calcium carbonate = calcium sulfate
What salt is produced when the acid is nitrtic acid n
Nitrate e.g nitric acid + calcium carbonate = calcium nitrate
What is soil treatment (neutralisation)
Plants grow best in ph7 soil so chemicals (lime) are added to raise the ph of acidic soil
What is indigestion (neutralisation)
Indigestion is when there is too much Hydrochloric acid in our stomach and the acid comes up the oesophagus to neutralise we take indigestion tablets
Metal + acid =
Salt + hydrogen
Acid + alkali =
Salt + water
Acid + base
Salt+ water
Acid + metal carbonate =
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is a .base
A substance that can react with an acid to neutralise it resulting in the formation of a salt and water. all alkalis are bases but not all bases are alakalis
What is an indicator
It’s a chemical that gives a colour change in acidic, alkaline and neutral solutions
What type of scale does the universal indicator use
Ph scale
1-6 acidic
7 neutral
8-14 alkaline
What are rhe colour changes of red litmus paper
Acid - red
Neutral - red
Alkaline - blue
What are rhe colour changes of blue litmus paper
Acid - red
Neutral - blue
Alkaline - blue
What are rhe colour changes of universal indicator
Acid - red
Neutral - Green
Alkaline - purple
What are rhe colour changes of methyl orange
Acid - red
Neutral - orange
Alkaline- yellow orange
What are rhe colour changes of screened methyl orange
Acid - orange -red
Neutral- Green
Alkaline - Green
What are rhe colour changes of phenolphthalein
Acid - colourless
Neutral - colourless
Alkaline - pink
What is an alkali
Is a soluble base
What is a salt
A compound formed when some or all of the hydrogen ions in an acid are replaced by metal ions or ammonium ions
What is a wasp sting and bee sting (neutralision)
If it’s a bee sting you but baking powder on it (alkaline)
If it’s a wasp sting you put vinegar (acidic)
What is the difference between an alkali and alkaline?
An alkali is a water soluble base while an alkaline refers to the property of a solution having a pH greater than seven
