Bonding Flashcards
Whatâs the exception for noble gases
Most atoms donât have full electronic shells except the noble gases
What does having a full outer shell do
Gives the atoms a stable , unreactive property . All atoms want full outer shells for that degree of stability
Whatâs an ion
Itâs a charged particle formed when an atom gains or looses electrons
Whatâs an cation
Positive ion
Whatâs an anion
Negative ion
A full outer shell makes a ion
Stable
The left side of the periodic table (metals)
Loss electrons to gain full outer shell configurations . This forms ions called cations
The right hand side elements of the periodic table (non metals)
Gain electrons to gain full outer shell configurations. They form negative ions known as anions
Whatâs an molecular ion
Itâd a charged particle containing two or more atoms covalently bonded
Basically an ion
Anions
Cations
Whatâs an ionic bond
The attraction between oppositely charged ions
Where does an ionic bond occur
Between nonmetals and metals (e.g metal compounds)
E.g Na and Cl react together Na looses electrons to the Cl atom so that both Na and Cl have full outer shells making sodium chloride
The opposite charges of the two ions.
Attract each other strongly and requires a lot of energy to break them apart. This is called ionic bond.
Covalent bond
Type of chemical bond formed by 2 atoms shared by one or more pairs of electrons to achieve stability
