a substance that binds to receptor molecules

what is an ionotropic receptor?
A
a receptor/ion channel that is opened when bound by an agonist

what is a metabotropic receptor?
A
a receptor that does not contain an ion channel but when activated can release G proteins to open a nearby channel. has a slower onset but lasts longer.

A
the presynaptic process - can either enhance or decrease the activity of a neurotransmitter.
