introduction Flashcards
what does neuroplasticity mean?
the ability of the nervous system to change in response to experience and the environment
what is the difference between the central and peripheral nervous systems?
central = anything in bone (brain and spinal cord) peripheral = outside bone
where does the verntral root flow?
stomach side
where does the dorsal root flow?
back side
what fluid runs through the central canal of the spinal cord?
cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
what properties does grey matter have?
cell bodies
no myelin
the flow of information?
in - dorsal
out - ventral
think alphabetic order.
what is a ganglion?
a group of cell bodies
what does the autonomic nervous system do?
regulates internal function.
eg blood pressure, heartrate, digestion etc
what does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
regulates the building of resources
what does the sympathetic nervous system do?
prepares the organism for action
what brain areas are contained within the hindbrain?
medulla
pons
- these contain all of the neruons that go to and from the cerebellum
what does the midbrain specialise in?
it contains neurons which control eye movements, neck muscles, the head etc.
what three brain areas are continuous with the spinal cord?
hindbrain, midbrain, diencephalon.
what brain areas are contained within the diencephalon?
thalamus
hypothalamus
- info from the thalamus us transferred from the cerebral hemispheres and the spinal cord.
