Neurotransmitters Flashcards
Acetylcholine (ACh)
Acetylcholine- Stimulate Skeletal muscle contraction, Inhibits cardiac muscle, Inhibit or excites smooth muscle and glands
Dopamine
Biogenic amines - produces inhibitory activity in the brain, important roles in cognition, motivation, behavior and mood. Decreased levels in Parkinson’s
Norepinephrine
Biogenic amines - amphetamines Increase release, cocaine decreases removal from synaptic cleft
Epinephrine
Biogenic amines - has various effects on the thalamus, hypothalamus, and spinal cord
Histamine
Biogenic amines - plays a role in sleep and memory
Serotonin
Biogenic amines - related to sleep, appetite, cognition and mood. Prozac decreases reuptake
Gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA)
Amino acid- inhibitory neurotransmitter, influences muscle tone
Beta-endorphin
Neuropeptides- prevents release of pain signals from neurons and fosters a feeling of well-being
Adenosine
Has an inhibitory effect on neurons in the brain and spinal cord
