Neurotransmitters Flashcards
1
Q
What is the neurotransmitters assumption?
A
A chemical message that goes through neurons and are linked to certain emotions and mental illnesses.
2
Q
What are neurotransmitters?
A
Electrically excitable cells that form the basis of the nervous system
3
Q
Describe synaptic transmission
A
- Synaptic transmission is the commiunication between two neurons
- Information is passed through the axon of the presynaptic neuron to the acon terminals as an electrical impulse
- The electrical impulse triggers the presynaptic vesicles to release neurotransmitters (a chemical messenger)
- The neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft and binds to the receptor cells on the postsynaptic neuron

Q
Example in psychology?
A
Mental health
Depression: Serotonin has a role in our appetite and mood. Too little causes depression. antidepressants work by increasing the availability of serotonin at the presynaptic receptor sites.
Schizophrenia: High levels of dopamine cause schizophrenia. Drugs that block dopamine activity reduce schizophrenic symptoms
