Neurotransmitters Flashcards
What is a synapse?
The site where communication between neurons occurs.
Synaptic neuron terminal buttons, synaptic gap, and postsynaptic neuron dendrites.
What is a neurotransmitter? And what is reuptake?
A chemical substance produced by a neuron that carries messages between neurons or neurons to muscles/organs.
Re-uptake: neurotransmitters that do not bind to receptors of postsynaptic neurons are absorbed back into the pre- terminal buttons.
Glutamate
Excitory neurotransmitter. Enhances information transmission by making postsynaptic neurons more likely to fire. Brain function, learning, memory
Gamma-amino butyric acid
Inhibitory transmitter. Makes postsynaptic neurons less likely to fire. Fine tunes neurotransmission in brain
