Learning and memory Flashcards
Synaptic plasticity
The ability of synapses to change over time through use or disuse.
Long term potentiation v depression
Long term potentiation is the strengthening of synaptic connections through activity so it has more anhanced transmission.
Long term depression is the decrease in strength of synaptic transmission from lack of stimulation.
Where r neurohormones released vs neurotransmitters
neurohormones are released into capillaries and absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to neurons (this means it can time acter secretion to take effect)
neurotransmitters are released into synaptic gap and act within seconds-minutes.
Adrenaline + memory
Adrenaline can enhance consolidation of long-term memories of emotionally arousing experienfes. Amygdala is activated to signal hippcampus that memory is important.
