Neuroscience and Behaviour Flashcards
Define Endocrine System
A network of glands that produce and secrete chemical messages into the bloodstream known as hormones, which influence a wide variety of basic functions such as metabolism, growth and sexual development.
Cerebral Cortex
Outermost layer of the brain, visible to the naked eye and divided into two hemispheres.
Subcortial structures
Areas of the forebrain, housed under the cerebral cortex, near the centre of the brain.
Thalamus
Relays and filters information from the senses and transmits the information to the cerebral cortex.
The thalamus receives information from every sense except the ______
Smell, since that is directly linked to the cerebral cortex.
Thalamus closes the pathway of incoming senses during _____.
Sleep.
Hypothalamus
Regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst and sexual behaviour.
Hindbrain
An area of the brain that coordinates information coming in and out of the spinal cord.
4 structures that make up the hindbrain?
Medulla, cerebellum, the pons and the reticular formation
3 main functions of the hindbrain?
Alertness, motor skills and respiration.
Function of the medulla?
Circulation, heart rate and respiration. (extends from the spinal cord into the skull)
Function of the cerebellum?
A large structure of the hindbrain that controls fine motor controls.
Function of the reticular formation?
Regulates sleep, wakefulness and level of arousal.
Function of the pons?
Relays information from the cerebellum to the rest of the brain.
Spinal reflexes
Simple pathways in the nervous system that rapidly generate muscle contractions.
