3.4 Structure of the Brain Flashcards
Define Hindbrain
Area of the brain that coordinates information coming into and out of the spinal cord
Functions of the hindbrain?
Respiration, alertness and motor skills
Structure of the hindbrain?
Include medulla, cerebellum, reticular formation and the pons.
What is a medulla?
an extension of the spinal cord into the skull, responsible for the heartbeat, respiration and circulation.
What is a reticular formation?
responsible for regulating sleep, wakefulness and levels of arousal. starts from the medulla and extending upwards.
What is a cerebellum?
A large structure of the hindbrain that controls fine motor skills.
What are the pons?
A structure that relays information from the cerebellum to the rest of the brain.
What is a tectum?
It orients an organism in an environment.
(receives stimulus input from the eyes, ears, and skin and moves the organism in a coordinated way towards the stimulus)
What is a tegmentum?
It is involved in movement and arousal.
What is a forebrain?
The forebrain is the highest level of the brain. It controls complex cognitive, emotional, sensory, and motor functions
