Neuroscience and Behavior Key Terms Review Flashcards
What makes up the hindbrain?
- medulla
- reticular formation
- cerebellum
- pons
What is the role of the medulla? *hindbrain
the medulla is an extension of the spinal cord into the skull that coordinates heart rate, circulation, and respiration
What is the role of the reticular formation *hindbrain
a small cluster of neurons which regulates sleep, wakefulness, and levels of arousal
What is the role of the cerebellum? *hindbrain
a large structure of the hindbrain that controls fine motor skills
What is the role of the pons?
a hindbrain structure that relays information from the cerebellum to the rest of the brain
What are the subcortical structures in the forebrain?
- thalamus
- hypothalamus
- hippocampus
- amygdala
- basal ganglia
- pituitary gland
What is the role of the thalamus?
the thalamus relays and filters information rom the senses and transmits the information to the cerebral cortex
What is the role of the hypothalamus?
the hypothalamus regulates body temp, hunger, thirst and sexual behavior
What is the role of the hippocampus?
the hippocampus creates new memories, integrates memories into a network of knowledge so that they can be stored indefinitely in other parts of the cerebral cortex
What is the role of the amygdala?
the amgydala plays a central role in many emotional processes, particularly the formation of emotional memories
What is the role of the basal ganglia?
a set of subcortical structures that directs intentional movements
