Neuroscience Flashcards

1
Q

Roediger & Pyc (2012)

A

Cognitive and educational psychologists have identified strategies to improve memory and learning-but these are not yet widely used in schools. Examples: spacing and interleaving of practicing skills, retrieval practice, explanatory questioning and self-explanation as a study strategy

Q

Daniel (2012)

A

More work is needed to move research from lab to classroom before it can be applied. Must first see if research can be applied in more complex settings. Researchers don’t appreciate the complexity of schools.

Q

Hardiman (2012)

A

Most educators don’t have the background to parse research from lab, most research is not ready to be used in the classroom. New teacher education programs so that teachers can be the “translators” of cognitive science research

Q

Carrion & Wong (2012)

A

Children who have PTSS (post-traumatic stress symptoms) have higher levels of cortisol than those without a trauma history. High cortisol levels are associated with lower volume of the hippocampus (memory) and prefrontal cortex (executive functioning).

Q

Hackman (2010)

A

Childhood SES influenced brain development-especially systems that underlie language and executive functioning
Growing up in a low SES family is associated with worse health and impaired cognitive and emotional development. SES positively correlated with academic achievement. Mediating factors: stress, toxin levels, parent/child interaction (cognitive stimulation)

Q

Rodriguez (2013)

A

Important to use systems-thinking approach to education because teacher, student and environment are all interacting. Master teachers continually adapt their practice to feedback.
