Neuropsychology Flashcards
Soma
Neuron body
Dendrites
Information reception trees of the neuron
Axon
Long ass wire carrying information to the next cell over
Myelin Sheath
Fatty tissue covering Axon, speeding up the information transfer
Terminal buttons
Ends of the cells, secrete neurotransmitters
Synapses
Where the party happens and the two cells get together
Glia
Support cells throughout the nervous system
Resting Potential
A neuron’s stable charge when it’s at rest, it’s negative
Action Potential
Brief shift in a neuron’s electrical charge hat travels along an axon
Synaptic Cleft
The place where the swimming dance party happens. Also, the gap between two neurons
Neurotransmitters
Cool word. Just means packets of information which transmit it from one cell to another
Postsynaptic Potential (PSP)
Voltage change at a receptor site on a postsynaptic cell membrane
Excitatory PSP
+ voltage shift that increases the likelihood that the postsynaptic neuron will fire action potentials
Inhibitory PSP
- voltage shift that decreases the likelihood that the postsynaptic neuron will fire action potentials
Reuptake
In which neurotransmitters get sucked back up the terminal button/cleaned from the synaptic cleft
Acetylcholine (ACh)
A type of neurotransmitter, controls motor neurons that are attached to the skeletal muscles. Also, arousal, attention and memory
Dopamine (DA)
Neurotransmitter, involved in control of voluntary movement, makes you feel good. Breaking Bad causes DA activity to elevate.
Norepinephrine (NE)
Neurotransmitter, involved in modulation of mood and arousal
Serotonin
Neurotransmitter, involved in regulation of sleep and wakefulness, eating, aggression
GABA
Neurotransmitter, inhibitory
Endorphines
Get them after a workout, makes you feel good, like really good. As though you’ve had some Morphine. Pain relief.
