Q

What is the idea of ‘localisation’ in the brain

A

The brain only working in in certain areas for certain functions (ie hearing only uses one part of the brain)

Q

Why is ‘localisation’ rejected in modern day?

A

The brain works as a network rather than in localised regions

Q

What is the PNS and what is its purpose?

A

Peripheral Nervous System:

  • To collect sensory information
  • use motor commands
  • Regulate autonomic functions (sweating, homeostasis)

Q

What is the function of the thalamus?

A

All sensory information (except for smell) passes through. The thalamus is a relay station for all sensory information

Q

What is the Function of the Hypothalamus?

A

Helps control many autonomic and endocrine system functions and is indirectly associated with hormones. Including, hunger, sexual behaviour, temperature, and aggression.

Q

What is the Function of the cerebellum?

A

Set up to simultaneously receive and orginse input from multiple central nervous system networks. As a result it has a lot to do with movement.

Q

What is the Function of the Pons?

A

connects the cerebellum to the brain and the Medulla. Helps regulate arousal, which is coordinated with the cerebellum, as well as facial expressions, eye movement, and body orientation/coordination through sight.

Q

What is the Function of the Medulla?

A

It is the transitioning point between your brain and spinal cord. You could not breath, your heart wouldn’t beat and you couldn’t swallow without it. Sufficient damage to the Medulla is fatal as a result.

What is the central sulcus?

A

the central line or fold (fissure) that runs down the middle of your brain

16
Q

What is the Function of the Precentral Gyrus?

A

Responsible for mainly motor control (just in front of the central sulcus)

17
Q

What is the Function of the partial lobe?

A

Primary target for sensory input from pressure (touch), muscle-stretch and joint receptors. Also responsible for processing and integrating information about body position

18
Q

What is the Function of the occipital lobe?

A

Mainly the basic analysis of vision

19
Q

What is the Function of the Temporal Lobe?

A

Processes auditory information, particularly spoken language. Responsible for complex aspects of vision, including movement and some emotional and motivational behaviours
