What is the definition of Deviance?
behaviours, thoughts and feelings that are not in line with normal or usually accepted standards
What is the definition of Distress?
Behaviours, thought and feelings that are up setting and cause pain, suffering, and/or sorrow
What is the definition of Dysfunction?
thought and feelings are disruptive to ones regular routine or interfere with day-to-day functioning
What is the definition of Danger?
thoughts and feelings may lead to harm or injury to self or others
What does DSM stand for
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
When does Anxiety become problematic?
when it gets in the way of doing what we need want to do
What is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
- Obsessions are recurrent unwanted and intrusive thoughts, fears, urges, or images
- Compulsions are behaviours that an individual feels driven to perform in response an obsession
What is Hoarding disorder?
This condition is characterised by difficulty getting rid of things, even when they have no financial or practical value.
What are depressive disorders?
More than just sadness, people with these also experience changes in their appetite, difficulty concentrating and irritable.
Suicidal behaviours can accopany major depressive disorder
What is Bipolar disorder?
- Mania = a distinct period of high energy and increased activity, that interrupts normal life.
- Depression = marked by sad mood and loss of interest or pleasure in things
What is the difference between Bipolar and Bipolar II?
People with Bipolar II experience ‘Hypomania’ which is less intense and does not impair as much functioning compared to ‘Mania’
What is Schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders?
Seem to have lost touch with reality and have a hard time thinking clearly, and have significant difficulty functioning in their daily activities
What is adjustment disorder?
Trying to cope after a stressful period, generally for 3 months
What is PTSD
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event
What is an Eating Disorders
eating disorders are about weight, shape and size
What are the different types of eating disorders
Anorexia nervosa
Bulimia nervosa
Binge eating disorder
What are Somatic symptoms?
individuals with these diagnoses may experience real symptoms of illness or injury, there is no medical explanation
What is Factitious disorder?
A condition in which individuals knowing knowingly and deliberately cause themselves or others to be physically ill or injured
What are elimination disorders?
Elimination disorders involves the elimination of urine (enuresis) and feces (encopresis) in places other than the toilet
What is the difference between ‘enuresis’ and ‘encopresis’?
'enuresis' = Urine 'encopresis' = Feces
What is Encopresis?
Pooing is spots other than a toilet after being toilet trained.
What are the 2 Sleep-wake disorders?
- Insomnia = Makes it hard to go to sleep, may feel fatigued
- Parasomnia = causes abnormal behavior while sleeping (eg. talking or sleepwalking)
What is Gender dysphoria?
experience of distress, discomfort and/or anxiety associated with a gener assignment that does not match one’s gender identity
What are the most common Psychological Diagnoses as children.
Conduct Autism Elimination Intellectual disorders feeding disorders
What are Substance-related and addictive disorders?
characterised by repeated and compulsive engagement in activities that bring about immediate pleasure, even when the long-term outcomes are negative (eg. drugs and gambling)
What are Neurocognative disorders ?
Affect how the brain processes information, disorders are acquired, meaning that the cognitive deficit was not present at birth (eg. alzheimers)
What causes Alzheimers?
It is thought to be attributable to genetic mutation in brain cells
What are the Three types of personality disorders?
Cluster A: odd and eccentric behaviours
Cluster B: dramatic, emotional, and erratic behaviours
Cluster C: anxious and fearful behaviours
What are two common borderline personality disorders?
- Antisocial Personality disorder
- Narcissistic Personality Disorder
