Neuropsychiatric Medications Flashcards
1
Q
Carbamazepine uses
A
- used for seizures, mood, neuro pain, trigeminal neuralgia
- slows down everything (CNS slowing)
2
Q
carbamazepine metabolism
A
- induces its own metabolism
- lots of drug interactions and speeds up the metabolism of other meds
3
Q
carbamazepine side effects
A
- thrombocytopenia
- hyponatremia
- dizziness
- ataxia
- anemia, agranulocytosis
4
Q
oxcarbazepine
A
- lighter version of carbamazepine
- no auto induction of metabolism, less side effects
5
Q
phenytoin/ fosphenytoin levels
A
- fosphenytoin = prodrug for parenteral administration
- adjust dose in small increments because level rise rapidly (non-linear)
- concentrations increase with kidney dysfunction and cause cardiac complications
6
Q
phenytoin/ Fosphenytoin ADR
A
- arrhythmias
- hypotension
- CV depression
- vitamin K deficiencies
- bone marrow hypoplasia
- congenital defects
7
Q
lamotrigine ADR
A
- less CNS and congenital malformations
- for mood disorders
8
Q
lacosamide side effects
A
- safe medication
- pregnancy category C
9
Q
gabapentin metabolism
A
- not protein bound
- unchanged by the kidneys
10
Q
gabapentin meta analysis results
A
- decreases post-op pain and opiate requirements
11
Q
gabapentin in combo with opiates
A
- cause severe resp distress
12
Q
pregabalin ADRs
A
- edema
- difficulty concentrating
- pts complain of walking on this med
- higher side effects but better pain control compared to gabapentin (similar med)
13
Q
valproic acid ADRs
A
- thrombocytopenia
- hyperammonemia
- hepatotoxicity
- sedation, confusion, irritability
14
Q
felbamate side effects
A
- high risk of aplastic anemia and fatal hepatic failure
15
Q
topiramate ADRs
A
- slowed speech
- confusion
- appetite suppression
