Neurophysiology: intro to the NS and cells of NS Flashcards
What makes up the CNS?
brain and spinal cord
What makes up the PNS?
afferent divison and efferent division
What falls under afferent division?
somatics sesnory: body surface (temp, pressue(
Visceral sensory (infor from organs)
Special sensory( hearing, vision)
What falls under efferent
somatic motor: regulates skeltal muscles
Autonomic motor
Dendrites
recieve information
Cell body
dendrites attach to the cell body and NT found here
Axon hillock
part of the neuron where an axon leaves the cells body
Axon
extension from the cell body, pushes action potentials away from the cell body
Axon terminals
end of axon
What is axon transport
moves things like NTs from the cell body to the axon terminal where they are released
Steps of axon transport
- NT is syntheized in the cell body and packaged into a vesucle
- vesicle goes down the axon’
- vesicle is stored in the terminals
4 exocytosis occurs to release the NT chemicals
How do neurons communicate?
They communicate chemically with each other and other cells across small gaps called synapses
A neuron sends a signal at a synapse is called
presynaptic
A neuron receives a signal at a synapse is called
post synaptic
Oligodendrocyte
creates and maintains myelin wrappings
- 1 cell can have up to 40 wrappings
