Neurophys block 5 Flashcards
What are the 3 meninges?
- Dura matter
- Arachnoid
- Pia Matter
Dura matter
- outmost layer
- fused w inner skull
- thicker, protects the CNS
Arachnoid
- web like appearance, trabeculae
- Thin, loose CT
- Subarachnoid space between arachnoid and pia matter
What is the function of the subarachnoid space?
Traps CSF, CSF is absorbed
Pia matter
Innermost layer
Adheres to surface of CNS, covers CSF
What is the major source of CSF?
Choroid plexus
Ventricular system
- Lateral ventricle
- 3rd ventricle
- 4th ventricle
One of the places where the CSF is produced
Interstitial capillaries
Provides O2 + substances consumed in large amounts
Macronutrients
Absorption of CSF
From subarachnoid space into venous sinuses through
- Arachnoid villus
- Dorsal Sagittal sinus
- Veins
PRESSURE DEPENDENT + UNIDIRECTIONAL
Functional types of synapses
- Chemical
- Electrical
Chemical synapses
- most common, unidirectional
- presynaptic neuron secretes neurotransmitter and acts on receptor proteins in post synaptic membrane
EXCITATORY + INHIBITORY
Ex: AcH @ NMJ
Electrical synapses
Adjacent cells directly connected by clusters of ion channels called GAP JUNCTIONS
BIDIRECTIONAL
interacts w chemical synapses, promotes synchronous firing
Ionotropic Receptors
- Cation channels opened by excitatory neurotransmitters
- Induces depol +++
Ex: Na+ channel
Metabotropic receptors
- acts thru secondary messengers
- GPCR’s open ion channels thru post synaptic membrane
Activates cAMP, intracellular enzymes, or gen transcription
Types of summation in graded potentials
- Spatial summation
- Temporal summation
