Q

Multiple sclerosis

A

Demyelinated plaques in the BRAIN and SPINAL CORD. Episodes seperated by space and time, exacerbations and remissions. CSF – oligoclonal immunoglobulin on electrophoresis, lymphocytes, and protein. Certain HLA haplotypes are correlated. May be AI or viral.

Q

Huntingdon’s

A

Striatum of basal ganglia degeneration – caudate nucleus and putamen. Ventricular enlargement and basal atrophy
The more of the AGC repeats, the sooner the onset.

Q

Parkinson’s

A

Lewy [bodies] “Park”ed his car in the substantial nigra to get some “Dope”amine for the [basal] “gang”lia.

Also TRAP
- tremor, rigidity, akinesia/bradykinesia, postural instability

Lead with head, forward propulsion.
Lewy bodies contain alpha synuclein.
Definitive diagnosis made upon autopsy of the midbrain. Looking for those Lewy bodies, many IC eosinophiic granules and the halo.

Malfunction of the dopaminergic producing cells of the substantia nigra causes malfunction of the basal ganglia, which controls motor movements – specifically the amplitude and speed of the movements.
