Neuropathic Arthropathy + Synoviochondrometaplasia Flashcards
What is neuropathic arthoprathy and what is it due to
- Looks like a degenerative process run wild
- due to a loss of jt proprioception (and pain); causes multiple microfractures
causes of neuropathic arthropathy (mc)
- Diabetes (mc)
- Syringomyelia
- spinal trauma
- syphilic dorsalis
2 types of neuropathic arthropathy and mc loc for each
- Hypertrophic (mc type)
- lower extremity mc - Atrophic- upper extremity mc
Hypertrophic neuropathic arthropathy findings
bag of bones
-mc in diabetes
Overall radiographic findings of neuropathic arthropathy (6)
- distention (swelling)
- Density (increased)
- Debris (oseus debris)
- Destruction
- Dislocation
- Disorganization
What is synoviochondrometaplasia (SCM)
-synovial nodules undergo metaplastic transformation to cartilage, then detach and ossify
–Jt mice
What is the mc loc for SCM
knee is mc (50%)
clinical presentation of SCM
- from nothing to large effusion + locking
- swelling, discomfort and reduced ROM mc
Primary form of SCM characteristics
- numerous, equal in size/shape
- monoarticular (in otherwise normal jt)
- mc in 3rd/4th decade
Secondary form of SCM
occurs in diseased jt
-few loose bodies, more variable in size
