Neurons & Synapses: BIOPSYCHOLOGY Flashcards
1
Q
What are Neurons?
A
Cables of the body that carry information in electric impulses (action potential)
2
Q
Three types of neuron
A
Relay, Motor, Sensory
3
Q
Function of Sensory neurons
A
Receiving information
4
Q
Function of Relay neurons
A
Transmitting information
5
Q
Function of Motor neurons
A
Controlling muscles to respond
6
Q
Process at a Reflex Arc
A
- Receptor detects a stimulus
- Sensory neurons send electric impulses to relay neurons. Connect sensory to motor neurons
- Effector produces a response from the motor neuron
7
Q
Seven features of a neuron
A
- Cell body
- Dendrite
- Myelin Sheath
- Axon Terminal
- Axon
- Nucleus
- Nodes of Ranvier
8
Q
What is Synaptic Transmission ?
A
Communication of neurons through synapses. Action potentials are translated into neurotransmitters. These are interpreted at receptors.
9
Q
Process of Synaptic Transmission
A
- AP or NT arrive at terminal from axon
- Neurotransmitter is packaged into vesicles
- Vesicle fuses with cell membrane
- NT fuses across synapse
- NT binds to receptors
- Surplus NTs are broken down or recycled by uptake channels
