Neurons Flashcards
Neurons
Cels that conduct nerve impulses
Electrochemical events control everything, like think or feel, make up the nervous system.
Motor neuron
Sends message from cns to rns
Carry action potentials (nerve impulses)
Away from cns, towards an effector
Have short dendrites
Long axon
Large cell body
Sensory neuron
Sends. Message from the PNS about the environment to the CNS.
Carry’s action potentials away from a sense organ or receptor in PNS towards the CNS.
Short axon
Small cell body
Relay neuron
Sends messages quickly between sensory and motor neurons.
Involved in reflexes
Carry action potentials between neurons, within the CNS.
Situated in spinal cord and brain
Have many axons
Action potentials
Rapid rise and subsequent fall in voltage or membrane potential across a cellular membrane with a characterised pattern
E.g. neurons and muscle cells
Stimulates starts the rapid change in voltage or action potentials.
reflex arc
controlled by reflexes
nerve pathway makes a fast automatic response.
e.g. pull hand away from flame without thinking about it
