Neurons Flashcards
How do neurons transmit signals
Electrically and chemically
What is sensory neuron
The input
What does sensory neuron do
Carries messages from pns to cns
Converts stimuli to impulses
Carry nerve impulses to spinal cord and brain-CNS
translates impulses into sensation- hearing,vision,smell,taste,touch
Where are sensory neurones found
Receptors such as eyes ears tongue and skin
What is motor neurone
Output
What do motor neurones do
Connect cns to effectors such as muscles and glands
Control muscle movement
Release neurotransmitters that bind to receptors creating a response leading to movement
Where are motor neurons found
in the CNS
What is relay neurons
The connector
What do relay neurones do
Connect sensory neurones to the motor
Allow sensory motor neurons to communicate
Where are relay neurons found
Between sensory input and motor output/response
Brain and spinal cord
Structure of a neuron
Cell body - contains nucleus
Nucleus - contains genetic material
Dendrites - carry impulses to cell body
Axon -carries impulses away from cell body
