Localisation Of Brain Function Flashcards
Who argued for localisation function
Broca and wernicke
What is brain localisation
The idea that different parts of the body are associated with particular physical and psychological functions so if an area becomes damaged the function association with that area will be affected
How is the brain divided
Left and right hemispheres
What is lateralisation
When our physical or psychological functions are controlled or dominated by a particular hemisphere
What is the outer layer of both hemispheres called
Cerabal cortex
How thick is the cerebral cortex
3mm thick , which is why we are separate to animals
What colour is the cerebral cortex
Grey- due to location of cell bodies- grey matter
How is the cortex of both hemispheres sub divided
4 lobes:
The fontal lobe
The parietal lobe
The occipital lobe
The temporal lobe
Where is the motor area
Back of frontal lobes
What does the motor area do
Controls voluntary movements in the opposite side of the body
What happens if motor area is damaged
Loss of control over movements
Where is somato sensory area
Front of partitial lobes
What does somatosensory area do
Information from skin is represented (touch, heat)
What happens if somato sensory area is damaged
Sensitivity of skin receptors is removed
Where is the visual area
Occipital lobes
