Q

What is the axon and where is it found?

A
  • Branches out (down for motor neuron) and is usually btwn. dendrites & axon terminals
  • Long, thin tube filled w/ fluid which transmits messages to axon terminals

Q

What is the myelin sheath and where is it located?

A
  • Fatty tissue that covers axon in segments

- 20 times faster communication if neuron is myelinated

Q

What are the axon terminals and where are they located?

A
  • At the end of axon
  • Contains small sacs storing neurotransmitters
  • Message is distributed from neurotransmitters at axon terminals

Q

How do neurons transmit information to each other?

A
  • Once electrical message reaches axon terminal, chem process occurs
  • Chemicals released from synaptic knob of neurons are called neurotransmitters
  • Synapse = small gap btwn. two neurons where neurotransmitters are released

Q

What is a neurotransmitter?

A
  • Chemical created by neuron
  • Each neurotransmitter has a particular shape which binds to a specific receptor site
  • This is called lock and key model
