What are the three components of an emotion?
A
- A subjective feeling
- Expressive behaviours
- Physiological response

What are subjective feelings?
A
- Feelings based on an individual’s opinion of that emotion
- Every emotion gains an individual’s awareness

What is the continuum of emotion?
A
- refers to various intensities of a main emotion filled with sub-emotions
- e.g anger: annoyed -> frustrated -> upset -> irate -> furious -> enraged

How does mental illness affect emotions?
A
- Some mental illnesses allow for intense emotions (BPD, BP)
- Some mental illnesses dull emotions (Depression, Alexithymia)

Self report methods including:
- Interviews
- Questionnaires
- Self-monitoring

Why is it often impossible to observe emotions in a laboratory?
A
- It is unethical to provoke emotions
- It is often hard to observe emotions
