Nervous System Flashcards
What is the roles of the nervous system?
- Receive information
- Process information
- Respond to information
What are the two branches of the nervous system?
- Central nervous system (CNS)
2. Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What is the further division of the CNS?
- Brain
2. Spinal cord
What is the further division of the PNS?
- Autonomic
2. Somatic
What is the further division of the autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic
2. Parasympathetic
What is the CNS?
- The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord which controls much of the rest of the nervous system.
- Main role is to process info. from sensory systems & activate appropriate actions
What is the PNS?
- The PNS consists of a range of nerves that distribute throughout the body from the brain and spinal cord.
- Carries info. around body from CNS & sends info. back to CNS
What is the autonomic division of the PNS?
Everything that your body automatically does. This includes many body regulations. The autonomic part of the PNS is further divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
What is the somatic division of the PNS?
Everything voluntary that you do.
What is the sympathetic division of the PNS?
- Responds to stress
- Increase of heart rate & blood pressure
- Pupil dilation
- Fight, flight & freeze
- In times of stress it is more dominant than parasympathetic
What is the parasympathetic division of the PNS?
- More dominant than the sympathetic system in times of rest & recovery
- Aids in digestion and supporting body regulations
What are the functions of the spinal cord?
- Pass sensory info. from PNS to brain
- Pass motor info. from brain back to PNS
What are reflexes and how do they occur?
- Reflex is involuntary response to a stimulus
- Nerves in spinal cord can bypass brain
- This makes reflexes quicker
- Reflexes minimise harm
