Neurons Flashcards
dendrites
receive nerve impulses (action potentials) from other neurons + send to cell body
axons
takes signal away from cell body to axon terminal
cell body
contains nucleus, cite of metabolic reactions
sensory neurons
receive impulses from sensory receptors+ send to interneurons
interneuron
enable communication bte sensory/motor neurons to cns
motor neurons
send nerve impulses away from cns to effectors (muscles)
glial cells
nourish neurons, remove waste, defend against infection
schwann cells
form myelin sheath that insulates axons + increases speed of transmission
Nodes of Ranvier
gap btw axons that impulses jump across to increase speed of transmission
axon terminals
produce neurotransmitters that send signals to other cells
reflex arc
motor pathways with few neurons that allow for involuntary rapid response
recceptor-sensory neurons-interneauron - motor neuron- effector
