neuron structure and function Flashcards
dendrites
neutron cell processes that extend from the cell body and direct stimulus towards the cell body
axon
long cell process that extends from the neutron cell body. directs stimulus towards the synapse, away from the cell body.
axon hillock
beginning of the axon which lies close to the neutron cell body
axon end bulb
site of neurotransmitter release where the synaptic vesicles reach the pre-synaptic membrane.
synapse
specialised intercellular gap between the axon end bulb and target cell and between neutron cells
what is the role of the microtubules within the axon of a neuron?
The microtubules move the synaptic vesicles down the axon. Mitochondria provide the energy to do this
how are the synaptic vesicles released at the synaptic end bulb?
exocytosis
What is the Node of Ranvier?
the gap between the internodes of the axon where the signals jump over.
