CNS Flashcards
What is the central nervous system (CNS)?
The CNS is composed of the brain and the spinal cord
glial cell types within the CNS
oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, microglia and ependyma
oligodendrocytes
myelinating cells within the CNS. Have multiple processes so one can myelinated multiple axons
astrocytes
support and monitor the neurone cells. In the white matter there are more fibrous astrocytes and in grey matter there are more protoplasmic astrocytes
what type of cells cause scarring in the CNS?
astrocytes
microglial cells
modified macrophage cells of the CNS that mostly lie inactive but can phagocytose dying neurons
schwann cells
myelinating cells of the PNS. only one cell can myelinate one axon.
ependyma
specialised type of epithelium lining the myelin sheath. produces cerebrospinal fluid.
what are mixed nerves?
mixed nerves carry both sensory and motor axons. these are bundles of nerves surrounded by fibres (mainly collagen)
Endoneurium (as part of a mixed nerve)
very fine fibres surrounding individual nerve axons and myelin sheaths
perineurium
connective tissue fibres that bind multiple neutron axons into a fascicle
epineurium
loose connective tissue that surrounds the entire nerve and carries blood vessels inwards to the neurons.
