Neurology Flashcards
Only agent that has been shown to be effective in the prevention of tension type headache in controlled clinical trials
Amitriptyline
Antihypertensive agent associated with improved long-term neurologic outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
Nimodipine
Most sensitive and specific test for prion proteins (Creutzfeldt-Jakob) in the CSF
Real time quaking induced conversion assay
Pain with eye movement, unilateral visual deficits, afferent pupillary defect
Optic neuritis
Severely asymmetric parkinsonism, fixed dystonia, myoclonus, cortical sensory deficits, apraxia, cognitive deficits
Corticobasal degeneration
Progressive painful axonal polyneuropathy with predominant involvement of small fibers (pain in temperature) and multiorgan dysautonomia
Amyloid neuropathy
Recommended management for all adults with first new onset seizure
Brain MRI and EEG
Sustained or intermittent muscle contractions that are slow, repetitive, directional
Dystonia
Initial step and management for normal pressure hydrocephalus
High-volume CSF removal
Agent that can improve gate speed and endurance in patients with MS with ambulatory dysfunction
Dalfampridine
Severe pain localized to the Periorbital or temporal area, such as nasal congestion or rhinorrhea and ptosis or miosis; cluster headache is the most common subtype
Trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias
Proximal symmetric weakness, myalgias, cramps without loss or UMN signs, muscle mounding after percussion (myoedema)
Hypothyroidism
Appropriate management for small (<7mm posterior or <12mm anterior circulation) unruptured aneurysm
Followed with MRI
Next step in evaluation for SAH if CT scan is normal
CSF examination to look for erythrocytes or xanthochromia
Decline in cognitive abilities with relative preservation of day-to-day function and evidence of cognitive impairment on cognitive testing
Mild cognitive impairment
