Neurological/TBI Flashcards
Philosophy of Neurological
Many strategies of MT to assist in the many complication from neurological disorders….
cognitive, communication, physical, and emotional
There are many neurologic music therapy techniques that are employed…
MIT, TS, VIT, RSC - language
PSE, RAS - motor
socioemotional - group
Though special training is needed, a certified MT can practice forms of all of these methods
More and more research is being done to prove scientifically
Neurological
1 title/ author/ year/ sentence for a published study involving MT (can be sub-cat)
2009 Journal of Music Therapy by Thaut, Gardiner, Holmberg, Horwita, Kent, Andrews, Donelan, McIntosh artile titled Neurologic Music Therapy Improves Executive Function and Emotional Adjustment in Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
This study analyzed the effects of NMT on brain-injuried persons utilizing improv based on the rehab goals being addressed and the results proved that MT improved attention span, emotional adjustment, executive function, anxiety and depression
Neurological
1 non-music technique and explanation of it’s clinical application for this population
Visual aids could be used to assist those with language issues to identify the word or idea.
Neurological
1 MT intervention explanation including support for its use with this population - EBP
RAS can improve gait patterns in brain-injured clients by using music as an external time cue to regulate the body’s movement. First match baseline cadence and then step up in increments.
This was proven in a Journal of Music Therapy article in 1998 titled Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation in Gait Training for Patients with TBI in which the participants had huge increases…average of 51% increase in velocity, 16% cadence, 29% stride length, and 12% stride symmetry.
Neurological
3 common goals suggested by literature - can indicate specific populations/subgroups next to diagnose specific goals
- To improve gait
- To increase articulation of speech
- To increase memory
Neurological
1 national organization that provides training, resources, support or funding for people with this diagnosis
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
